D84 is based in Southsea and we are Southsea residents. Needless to say, we are proud of a great deal of our work in the area and we love to work locally. Southsea is a fantastic place to live and raise a family.

From it beginnings as a seaside resort in the mid 19th century, Southsea has grown into a dense residential suburb with a distinct commercial and entertainment area, separate from the town of Portsmouth. A key period in the development of Southsea occurred during the Napoleonic era. As the dockyard continued to grow, new homes were required for the increasing personnel, and many houses, villas and apartments were built. The architect and builder Thomas Ellis Own created many of these, and the surviving buildings retain a coherent late Georgian and early Victorian style.

The need to preserve and enhance the historic fabric of the town has given rise to a range of Conservation Areas, each with their own particular character and set of design guidelines. Navigating your way through these can often be a little bewildering and we find that our advice and guidance as to the best course of action can be very helpful at an early stage. We have worked on a wide range of projects here, ranging from commercial shopfronts to seafront renovations. We have experience in working in each of the many Conservation Areas and have a good working relationship with the Heritage team through our work on the many listed buildings in the locality.
