Planning Authority: Portsmouth City Council (PCC)
D84 has a wide range of work in Cosham and the surrounding areas; creating new homes and extending and remodelling existing properties. We are proud to record that our first project was located on London Road, Cosham.
From it beginnings as a settlement in the 10th century, Cosham remained a small village within the manor of Wymering right up until the 1900’s. In 1920 the boundaries of Portsmouth were extended to include the village of Cosham north of Portsea Island and in 1932 to include Drayton and Farlington to the northeast. This area then grew rapidly and soon all these villages became suburbs of the growing city.
The majority of properties in Cosham were built between 1920 and 1930, when the area was designated for new homes because 40% of the city itself was considered ‘unliveable’. Many soldiers and sailors stayed on the south coast after the Great War so it was heavily populated. The building style of the city was Victorian and Edwardian so it was a new refreshing approach to have these Art Deco and semi detached homes built. To have a bathroom on the first floor or at all was modern to the city.
The housing types here are many and varied, with the post war boom creating new estates providing houses of all shapes and sizes. Large detached family dwellings dot the hillside, enjoying fabulous view across the harbours and the Solent beyond, whilst the housing estates of Paulsgrove and Wymering provided the housing the country desperately needed after the war.
Modern methods of construction were often employed and some of the design work is both original and highly emblematic of its time. D84 have undertaken a wide variety of projects here and have a solid understanding of the house types Portsmouth City Council planning policies and aspirations.

“I recently worked with Keith at D84 architects and had a fantastic experience. Keith’s communication was excellent throughout the process, ensuring I was always informed and comfortable with each step. He truly understood what we needed and handled the work for us, from creating detailed drawings to submitting our plans to the council. His expertise and attention to detail made the entire process smooth and stress free. I highly recommend Keith at D84 architects for anyone looking for a dedicated and professional architect who really does make the process as easy as possible.”
